The Bantam L/L Wolverines launched from the Ayr Rocket's pad on Saturday afternoon with a solid 2-1 win, with thanks to Peewee L/L call ups Cecelia Martin and MacKenna Henderson. Both young ladies played admirably and with determination and as coach Wayne noted, did not look out of place!
Down over a third of the bench due to unexpected illness and injuries, the Wolverines pulled off their fifth win of the season, equalling in 7 games what took them 33 last year. Led by goals from Cass VanKalsbeek and Jess Leiskau the team battled through adversity to prevail.
Backed by some solid goaltending, Jillian Chesney started the game strong allowing only one after two periods of play and maintaining her sparkling goals against average (two goals in 7 games). Abbey Luckhardt would come into the third period and took all the fuel out of the Rockets with some fabulous saves and a third period shut out to nail down the victory.
We prepare for this Saturday's home game at 5:30 pm against the always tough Grand River Mustangs with a still shortened bench, but this team has shown already how deep and hard working it is with everyone stepping up to fill in the gaps.
