Bantam Wolverines Silver Medal Finalists!
Congratulations to the Snow's Appliances Bantam Wolverines on their end to a phenomenal season that concluded with a visit to the "A" division finals today and bringing home the Silver Medal for the Wolverines!
They met the Cambridge Roadrunner's at the packed Sportsworld complex this afternoon, and the team was met by a sea of Wolverine blue and gold support coming from the stands.
The Wolverines found themselves down quickly but we're able to rally on the strength of the crowd to get back into the game.
As she has done all season Captain Jess Leiskau worked her magic with a sure shot on the Cambridge goalie, finally finding her mark before the end of the first.
Goaltender Abbey Luckhart's kept the door closed after allowing the only one goal thru the first half of the game.
Alternate Captain Katie Kneisel would put the Wolverines into the lead with a patented end to end rush with a blast that found net through the Roadrunner keepers five hole.
Late in second period the Wolverines would find themselves the victim of a strange clearing pass from deep behind their net deflecting off the skate blade of a Wolverine. The teams would enter the third period tied at two's.
The third period the roadrunners found strength of running three lines, and would find the go ahead goal during a goal mouth scramble. They would follow that goal shortly thereafter with a seeing eye laser beam shot off post and blocker.
Cambridge was able to take advantage of their opportunities today. The Wolverines showing grace and good sportsmanship applauded their opponents and accepted their Silver Medal Finalists trophies knowing they had battled hard throughout the playoffs to cap off their season as amongst the best in the league.
The Wolverines can take pride in their accomplishments this season. Having risen from the bottom of the league last season to the top this year, they finished off with a winning fantastic record of 22 wins against 12 defeats and 7 draws. They carried a winning record throughout every tournament they entered, visiting the finals in two out of three events. Their penultimate experience came last week in a shootout win over the undefeated number one ranked Waterloo Ravens, getting them to the big dance today where they brought home another silver medal.
The Wolverines will finish off their season with a game versus the Twin Centre Herricanes this Wednesday in a revisit to the 2nd annual Nafziger Road "Subway" series. The Herricanes won the 1st annual event last spring, but the Wolverines look to retake the bragging rights this year in a shortened one game winner takes all game. The Wolverines will also play a tune up game on April 1st against the PeeWee C team as they help them to prepare for their Provincial's championship games later in the week.
