Kyla Kowalik Memorial Tournament

Tournament Rules 2016

1.      All OWHA rules will apply.  Handbook will be at the registration desk.

2.      A team representative must check in at the registration desk one hour prior to your first game.  Any pick up player consent forms must be presented at the desk and given to the tournament convenor.  A copy of the team’s OWHA signed roster must be handed in.  A team representative must present the roster form before the team’s first game in the tournament is played. Any teams not providing this will be removed from the tournament.  All players and team officials must sign in prior to each game.  Teams must be ready to play 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time in case the tournament gets ahead of schedule.

3.      A player must play for only one team during the entire tournament.  No exceptions given.  All players must be registered with the participating Novice, Atom, Peewee, Bantam or Midget house league team to be eligible, with the exception of pick up players as outlined above.

4.      All games will consist of 3 stop time periods (2 ten minute periods and 1 twelve minute period).  If however the score is separated by 5 goals the third period will be run as straight time.  In qualifier, semi-final, and championship games only, each team will be permitted one 30 second time out.  In games where an overtime period is played, a team may use their time out during the overtime if they have not already used it during regulation.  No curfews will apply to any games.

5.      Round robin games:  Two points will be awarded for a win, one point for a tie.  One point will be awarded for each period won, ½ point per period tied.  Highest number of points will determine which teams advance past the round robin games.  For four and five team divisions, the top two teams will advance to the final.

Six team divisions – Qualifier and Semi-Final games:

For six team divisions, the 1st place team in each pool advances to the semi-final, while 2nd and 3rd in each pool will play off in a cross-over game, the winner advancing to the semi-final.  There will be no overtime in the qualifier games.  If the game is tied at the end of regulation, a shootout will occur.  Each team will identify three shooters on the game sheet prior to the qualifier or semi-final game, by circling their jersey numbers on the game sheet.  All three shooters for each team will have the opportunity to shoot, one player from each team shooting simultaneously on the other team’s goalie.  If still tied after three shooters, the shootout will go to sudden victory format, where one player at a time from each team will shoot.  A shooter cannot be used again until all players on the roster, excluding goalies, have been used. I.e.: The first three shooters cannot shoot in the sudden victory round until all other players on the roster have taken a shot.  Game ends when one team’s shooter scores and the other team’s shooter does not score.

For eight team divisions, 1st and 2nd place teams in each pool will make the semi-final games.  This will be a cross-over where 1st in one pool plays 2nd in the other pool.

6.      Round Robin Tiebreakers (used only if teams are tied in total points after round robin):

a.      Total wins

b.      Record against other tied teams

c.      Goals scored minus goals against, total for all games

d.      Fewest goals against, total for all games

e.      Most goals scored, total for all games

f.      Fewest penalty minutes, total for all games

g.      Time of first goal scored in team’s first game (team with the earliest goal wins tie-breaker)

h.      Coin toss

7.      Designated home team will be required to wear light coloured jerseys.

8.      Awards will be given to champion and finalists in each division.  Only players and team officials on the tournament roster are eligible for awards.

9.      All equipment must be CHA approved.

10.     In Semi-Final and Championship games only, if tied after regulation, teams will play a sudden victory over time period.

a.      One five minute, stop time, sudden victory overtime, 4 players plus one goalie on each side.

b.      Penalties not completed in regulation time will carry over into the five minute overtime period.

c.      In sudden victory overtime play, no player changes are permitted during stoppages in play, all changes must be done on the fly only.

d.      If still tied after overtime it will go to a shootout.  Coaches must identify five shooters on the game sheet prior to the start of the game, by circling their jersey numbers.  All five shooters for each team will have an opportunity to shoot in the first round.  One shooter from each team will line up at centre ice, and skate in simultaneously on the whistle from the referee.  The team with the most goals after all five shooters have gone will be declared the winner.

e.      If still tied after the first shoot out round, a sudden victory shootout will take place.  Teams will provide one shooter at a time, with a shooter from each team again skating in simultaneously to take their shot.  Each team must go through their entire roster, excluding goalies, before any player can shoot a second time.

(i.e.: The five shooters from the first round of the shootout cannot shoot in the sudden victory round until all other players on the roster have taken a shot.).  The first team to score when the other team’s shooter does not score will be declared the winner.

f.      Any player that is serving a penalty at the end of the period immediately prior to the shootout is ineligible to participate in the shootout.  If she was one of the original five shooters, an alternative will be selected.

11.       Where one or both of the teams may be delayed by weather, teams should be aware that the amount of delay is limited and teams may have to start and/or play a game with the players it has available, subject, of course to Hockey Canada rules regarding minimum number of players.  Late arriving players that have been identified to the officials will be allowed to enter the game during a stoppage in play, sign the game sheet and participate in the remainder of the game.

In the event that one team is unable to ice a squad for a game due to weather, the attending team will be declared the winner, and all points for the game will be awarded to the attending team.  In the event that both teams are unable to ice squads for the game, the points per period and per game will be shared evenly.

12.       Any discrepancies or conflicts will be resolved by the appointed tournament officials whose decision is final.
