‘Twas the night before hockey,
and all through the rink
The ice pads were empty, the Zamboni in sync;
The jerseys were hung in the cubbies with care,
In hopes of a winning season soon they would share;
The fans, they were nestled all snug in their seats,
While visions of victories, outweighing defeats;
And the Coach in his hat, and the trainer with her kit,
Had just settled down for a pre-game chat-chit,
When down from the dressing room there arose such chatter,
the fans all turned to see what was the matter.
And out of the room they flew like a flash
Tore open the gate, to the ice they did dash.
The Wilmot Wolverines were off with a mission
with so much TENACITY, they embodied the definition.
When, what to the fans eyes should appear,
A Bantam C team that had nothing to FEAR,
With a look in their faces, so lively and quick,
dressed in full hockey gear, with the odd lucky stick.
Looking more like winners the coach called as they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
“Now Claire, Now Sarah, Now Shelby, and Kate!
On Cassie! On Suzanne, and Katie, don’t wait!
Go Romi, and Tori and Em and Jaye!
And Joselyn and Nat – Are you ready to play?”
So up to the top of the circle they all flew,
With the bucket of pucks, and an attitude that was NEW,
The fans cheered at the sight, in spite of the cold;
This gift of a season; a game that never gets old.
With the drop of the puck and blow on the whistle;
Away they flew like the down of a thistle.
I heard the Coach exclaim as the game got its start,
“Play hard you Wolverines, play with your heart!”
