Half Ice Program (Wilmot Girls Hockey)

PrintHalf Ice Program

This section of our website will provide additional details about how the Hockey Canada Novice Program Guide will be implemented for our rep and local league teams in the coming season.  As soon as information becomes available, we will share it here.

For the 2019-2020 season, Hockey Canada has mandated that all Novice players aged 7 and 8, both house league and representative teams, will begin their season on half ice.  At this time, it has not yet been determined if players will transition to full ice hockey mid-way through the season, or if the entire season will be played on half ice.  This will be decided by the individual leagues, in cooperation with the centres that participate in that league.

These program changes are mandatory, and must be followed by all centres and leagues.  Change can be stressful for everyone, and we want to provide appropriate support and guidance as we work to implement the new half-ice programming.  The WGHA strongly supports all player development initiatives that increase player engagement and make hockey more fun for kids!

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to discuss with your child's coach, or with our WGHA Local League Director, Duane Gingerich.

"With regards to the half ice setup, I wasn't sure what to think before we started (to be honest, when I saw the smaller nets and light pucks I was skeptical), but after playing for a bit, I think it was really good.  I felt like some of our lesser skilled players got a chance to contribute, and with it being essentially non-stop for 40 minutes, it really helps to keep everyone involved.  Since we didn't really break in the middle anyway, I feel like we could have just played 1x 40 minute period, rather than 2x 20 minutes." - Jamie Black,  Coach of the Huron Heat Novice team.
