Atom LL1 Wolverines take the Gold Medal at Kyla Kowalik tournament!
The Atom LL1 Wolverines participated in the Kyla Kowalik tournament January 13th – 15th.

In game 1 of round robin play, the LL1 Wolverines would play against co-host Wilmot Wolverines LL2.  This game would prove to be yet another close match up and have the same type of fast tempo reminiscent of the other two times they have squared off this season.  Claire Weinacht would break the 0-0 tie midway through the 2nd period; Olivia Burns would add the insurance goal late in the 3rd with assist to Charlee Harding and Kasey Livingstone would pick up the shutout as they would win the opener 2-0.  MVP player of the game award went to Charlee Harding.

In game 2, the Wolverines would play against the Kent County Fillies.  The Wolverines put up points in all three periods with goals by Isabella Mountain-Viera and Teagan Vinke.  Assists were picked up by Teagan Vinke, Emmie Fronchak and Rowyn Burns.  The game would end in a 3-0 win for the Wolverines and the MVP player of the game award went to Emmie Fronchak.

In game 3, the Wolverines played against Kitchener Red.  The Wolverines would set the pace of play during the first 2 periods and enjoy a lot of offensive zone time; however, Kitchener would come on strong in the 3rd and force the Wolverines to stay disciplined.  The Wolverines would eventually skate to a 3-2 win with goals by Faith Appleton, Teagan Vinke and Claire Weinacht.  Emmie Fronchak, Olivia Burns and Aleah Laverty would pick up the assists.  The game MVP award went to Aleah Laverty.

This tournament had a skills competition for the various divisions and the Wolverines were well represented in the Atom division, sweeping all four categories.

·         Fastest skater – Teagan Vinke

·         Best puck handler – Claire Weinacht

·         Shoot out – Faith Appleton

·         Best Goaltender – Kasey Livingstone

The Wolverines would close out round robin play on Saturday evening against Kitchener Blue.  The Kitchener goalie would unfortunately get injured in the game and was in and out of the lineup for the remainder of regulation.  The Wolverines would skate to a 4-0 win with goals by Faith Appleton, Teagan Vinke and Olivia Burns.  The game MVP award went to Olivia Patte.

The Wolverines would advance to the Final and would play against Kitchener Red.  Kitchener would come out strong the first couple shifts of the game and force goaltender Kasey Livingstone to come up with some timely saves to keep the score knotted at 0-0.  The Wolverines would respond to this effort and play their style game for the remainder of the tournament.  The defense would shut down the Kitchener threats and limit shots from the outside.  Goals would be scored by Teagan Vinke and Olivia Burns with assist to Olivia Patte as the Wolverines would take the gold medal with a 2-0 victory.  The game MVP award went to Rowyn Burns.

This tournament was a total team effort!  The Offense and Defense did all the good things they have been doing all season, however it was the small details that were really obvious to the coaching staff.  We executed “apple sauce” to perfection in a couple of the games and the girls all set small personal goals in the game to give them something additional to strive for.

The Wolverines play three more league games before heading out on the road for their final tournament of the season in Stoney Creek.
