Peewee BB Takes Gold at Waterloo Ravens Fall Challenge Cup
Congratulations to the Wilmot Wolverine PeeWee BB championship team, as they secured the gold medal this past weekend in the Waterloo Ravens Fall Challenge Cup.  The PeeWee BB team, proudly sponsored by the New Hamburg Legion Branch 532 Ladies Auxiliary, was one of three Wolverine gold medal winning teams this weekend.

Congrats to the Atom and Novice rep teams as well. The Wolverines had an early jump in the round robin play as they beat the hometown team Waterloo 2-1 on Thursday night.  Waterloo took the early lead in the first but Lindsay Slessor plunked one in the net after a beauty pass from linemate Paige Carter to tie the game in the second.  The game was evenly paced and the defensive partnership of Bella Davidson and Lauren Segeren, and the terrific goaltending by Lauren Watters kept the Wolverines in the game as they were tough at the blue line.  Late in the third, Paige Jurica scored for Wilmot with help from Mikayla O'Connell.

In game two last Friday night versus Scarborough, Carson Weiler had a beauty goal after assists from Slessor and Brianna Arends to lead the Wolverines in the game.  The play was extremely physical with Arends, Olivia Lichti and Lauren Bast stepping up their games with speed and body to control the game.  Emily Jantzi was the netminder for Wilmot and she was outstanding.  Scarborough managed to tie it up in the second but with many injuries and stoppage to play, the Wolverines were able to dominate the third, and Arends knocked one in (assists Segeren, Slessor).

In their third round robin game versus Whitby, the Wolverines came up short 1-0 after another evenly matched game.  Watters was excellent and kept the team in the game.  Jenna Kumpf, Sydney Knorr and Carter worked tirelessly to create scoring opportunities.

In the semi final match, the Wolverines saw Waterloo again but this time came with a spring in their step.  Arends had a rush with the puck and buried her own rebound in the first.  Kayla Schenk and Weiler were a defensive force at the blue line.  Waterloo was able to tie in the second, and the Wolverines had work to do.  Early in the third, Segeren fired one in with a beauty assist from Knorr, then late in the third Slessor secured the lead with a long shot from near centre ice into an empty net.  The fans were able to catch their breath as Waterloo was not giving up easily.

On Championship Sunday, the Wolverines saw the tough, fast Wolves from Whitby again.  The Wolves took the lead in the first but the Wolverines responded.  Jantzi was excellent with many glove saves, and Knorr was excellent on the backcheck.  Carter and Kumpf were flying on the ice and the speed and physical play of the Wolverine forecheck paid off as well.  Segeren scored a gorgeous top-shelf goal from the point (assist to Jurica).  Then later in the second, Bast tucked one in after a scramble in front to take the lead.  The Wolves got into penalty trouble with hooking and spearing penalties, and the Wolverines did not falter from taking advantage.  Jurica was able to allow the fans to breathe next with another long shot to an open net late in the third (assist to Segeren).  The Wolverines won the gold!

Special thanks to the Fallfest tournament organizers for a great tournament.  Also to the Wolverine coaching staff, family, friends and fans who supported the team all weekend.  The Wolverines take on Lakeshore and Chatham this coming weekend out of town.
