The Final! Silver Cup to the Midget Wolverines
Submitted By Chris Larochelle on Monday, March 30, 2015
The New Hamburg Optimists Midget Wolverines made it once again to the Championship after another great season for the ladies culminated in the one and done challenge! The Wolverines made the final on ...

Tuesday in a thrilling semi final versus the Stratford Aces #2 team.  Both teams fought to a 2-2 draw which would take them into a shootout to decide the winner.

The Wolverines would prevail with the shut out performance by Jillian Chesney in stopping all shots she faced in the one on one challenge.  After eight shooters the teams were still deadlocked , Cass Vankalsbeek would put the game away and the Wolverines would move on to the Final on Sunday.

Sunday found the Wolverines in the Finals again! For some it would be their second or third consecutive trip to the Championship game.  The opponent was the Grand River Mustangs, a team that we had played tight all season long.  For half the game, the teams would remain in a scoreless battle.  While pressuring for the opener, the Wolverines caught a hard break when the Mustangs scored shorthanded on a strange shot and bounce on net and would finish the second period down by one.

The Mustangs played their top line to start the third and with fresh legs they quickly tallied their second goal with barely a minute played into the final period.  The Wolverines then began to press to get on the board, but penalties would soon catch up with them.  As the game progressed both teams found penalty trouble and as the game took on more urgency for the Wolverines to get on the board, but having to play one down for the last third of the game was too much to overcome.  The Midget Wolverines would find their month long streak of 4 wins broken and would have to settle for a third silver medal in as many years.

Looking back on your fine season we can look upon it as a success!  Beyond a second consecutive trip to the finals, a Championship tournament banner will hang among those found on the Wolverines Champions wall for you look back proudly when your done playing.

The coaching staff would like to thank the ladies for their dedication and commitment to Firewagon hockey and thank those parents for their efforts in helping your daughters continue to play the game they love to play.

For those graduating from high school and moving on from girls hockey here in Wilmot, we hope you continue to find a way to either play or be involved in hockey in some ways as you make your way in life.  It's been fun getting to know many of you and hope that you are able to take away the some important life; skills like teamwork, goal setting, being on time, listening to directions or just getting along with people, along with you and pass those skills on to others you work, play and maybe even coach!

For those coming back next season, only five months til you get to strap on the blades once again and get to the battle once again to reach the Championship!

Have a safe and happy summer!

Your Midget Wolverines coaching staff.
