Wilmot Wolverines Win Gold!
Written by Brian Schnarr.

After a strong week of practices our girls headed into the Waterloo Ravens Fall Fest tournament November 6-9, 2014, excited and hungry to show what they could accomplish.

Our first game was against the host Waterloo Ravens. These two teams are evenly matched and the rivalry is growing fast.  The game was back and forth with great chances at both ends of the ice, goaltending and defence were definitely on display. This game ended in a 0 -0 tie, just a sample of things to come.

With a point under our belts the girls headed into the second game hungry for victory.  Coach Matt must have had one of those famous speeches before the game because the girls came out to play.  Scarborough just was not a match for our team.  A convincing 13 - 0 win gave the girls a lot of confidence heading into Saturday with a tough game against Ancaster staring us down.

The excitement of playing at the Waterloo Rec Center must have given the girls the confidence they needed, all the girls came to play and we carried the play all the way to a 2-0 victory.  Once again, great defence and goaltending as well as timely scoring is becoming the signature of this team. This win vaulted us into the Quarter Finals against Clarington later in the day.

On a cold Saturday evening we all crammed into Moses Springer Arena to watch our girls play the second game of the day, once again we carried the play and just kept putting pressure on and came out with a 6- 0 victory, once again our team signature shined through.

Off to championship Sunday we go with a game in the semis against a team we have not played. We did not know what to expect, but after a sluggish start we finally got our legs.  The girls were hard pressed to hold on to a 2-0 lead with the Cambridge team pulling their goalie with 3 min left.  In the end we held them off and celebrated as we were headed to the finals.

As we were waiting ,the news came to us that we would be playing our now arch rivals Waterloo Ravens with an identical record across the board we all knew this would be a great game.  With a delay because of a long game before us, coach Matt and his staff had to keep these wild Wolverines tame in the dressing room as the girls knew what they were playing for.

As expected these two teams came out to play with chances at both ends and with time winding down, to no one's surprise, this game ended in a 0 - 0 tie. This was just the beginning .  After an overtime of 4 on 4 we were still tied, so we played another overtime of 3 on 3 and once again the score was still tied.  Now with the entire attendance at Rim Park watching, we go into a shootout, and with both teams down to their last couple of shooters coach Matt puts the puck on Leah Yantzi's weapon of choice and she buries the go ahead goal.  Waterloo had one chance to extend the shootout but as Pink Floyd would say put another brick in the wall, and our wall Katelyn Robertson stood strong to preserve our win.   These girls made us all so proud as a parent I want to congratulate the girls and coaches for an awesome tournament .  Here’s to more good things to come.
