Bantam BB Storm into playoffs with five straight wins
On Jan 18, the Cook’s Pharmacy Wilmot Bantam BB team were stuck in tenth place and out of a play-off position with only 5 games left to play. They would have to beat Waterloo on the road, then again at home, and pretty much run the table to make the play-offs. The Wolverines quickly made up for lost time by putting together an impressive win streak.

Wilmot struck first in the Jan 18 match against Waterloo as Erin Holzscherer stole the puck and buried it. This was Holzscherer’s night as she tipped a Maya Graham pass to make it 2-0 two minutes later. Waterloo scored late to make it close but the Wolverines won 2-1 for their first win in 2014. Goalie Abbey Luckhardt was solid in the win. High flying Twin Centre was the opponent on the next night and again Wilmot scored first as Alexi Dakin set up Logan McIntyre. Twin Centre responded quickly but the Wolverines went on a scoring tear. Logan Arnold finishing a quick passing play from Holzscherer and Alyssa Pogson to make it 2-1 at the end of the first. With no scoring in a tight checking second and Goalie Cassie Mann making a spectacular glove save, Graham potted two in the third for a 4-2 win against a strong opponent. On Jan 24, Windsor was the visitor and a team fighting with the Wolverines for a play-off spot. Graham from Maddie Sturgeon scored the lone goal for a 1-0 win in a defensive gem with Mann perfect in net.

On Jan 28, Waterloo returned for a crucial game but Wilmot struck first as McIntrye got a puck to the front of the net and Holzscherer swept it home. Karley Dajka passed the puck on the tape of Pogson’s stick and she snagged the top corner for a 2-0 lead. McIntyre made it 3-0 on a wraparound that she finished on her knees jamming the puck into the corner of the net. Waterloo scored to make it 3-1 with considerable time left in the third but the defense, especially Marieke Van Rooyen and Rachel Kehl and the goaltending of Luckhardt preserved the win. The last game of the season was away in Sarnia. The Wolverines still needed a win to guarantee a play-off spot. Wilmot played an aggressive, hard pinching game as defensemen Taylor Wright, Kira Larochelle, Cassandra Postrozny and Emily Huras mostly kept the puck from leaving the opposition end. The forwards went to work as Kai Wilson buried a centring pass from McIntrye to make it 1-0 in the second. Graham and Sturgeon set up Dajka for an insurance goal. With their net empty, Sarnia scored with 46 seconds left and with only seconds left the Sarnia defense sprang a Centre on a breakaway only to be stoned by Luckhardt on the final buzzer. The 2-1 win capped off 5 consecutive wins and secured the sixth play-off spot in the division for the Wilmot Wolverines.
