Novice B Wilmot Wolverines are Guelph Finalists
Written by Tim Austin

This weekend the Novice B Wolverines travelled to Guelph for the Guelph Friendship Tournament.  Wilmot started the tournament on Saturday morning without two of their key defence and found themselves down early to the Guelph Gryphons.  The girls were never able to recover and lost their first game 6-1.

The second game was against the Vaughan Flames and the girls came out flying having the best offensive game that they have had all season with contributions from all of the forwards.  Goals from Lyndsay Dajka, Kassia Deep, Madalyn Henhoeffer, Madison Lehman-Ionson, Emma Schweitzer, and assists by Sarah Bell and Jaden Greenlee would lead the Wolverines to a 11-2 win.

That set up a Sunday morning must win game against the Peterborough Ice Kats.  The girls had lost previously to the Ice Kats in the first tournament of the season but they came out strong in the first period with an early goal by Kasey Bater.  The game was a back and forth contest with each side getting several chances but Emily West was solid in net and stopped all but two shots.  Late goals by Neve Schweitzer and Maeve Turner lifted the girls to a 3-2 win and set up a rematch against Guelph in the finals.

The girls went into the finals playing some of the best hockey that they had played all year.  Great defense by Morgan Yantzi, Allysa Gingerich, Alexis James and Melanie Austin along with strong goaltending by Mary Lencz would keep the game scoreless through regulation.  The girls played a 4 on 4 overtime and eventually lost a heartbreaker to a team that they had played three times in the last two weeks.  Although they didn’t win they had a great tournament and went home proud that they were the Guelph Friendship Finalists.

The tournament was great preparation for next weekends Provincial Championship tournament being held in Mississauga. All of the parents and coaching staff wish them all the best next weekend. GO WOLVERINES!
