Wolverines Win Big!
Congratulations to the Atom C Wilmot Wolverines as they had a spectacular weekend at the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League Championship and secured the gold medal.  The team defeated the Twin Centre Hericanes in a nail biting overtime win 2-1.  Maddie Stainer-Mace fired in the overtime game-winning goal in the tilt and the Wolverine fans were ecstatic.

Stainer-Mace got a great bounce from the puck and skated hard to the net getting past the defence and had a brilliant raised shot.  Going undefeated all weekend in round robin play, the Atom C team had a terrific showing beating Woolwich 2-0, Lindsay 4-2, Brantford 2-0 and then tieing Twin Centre 1-1.  The Hericanes and Wolverines have seen a lot of each other this year and had to play twice on the final day.  Both goalies were outstanding and made brilliant saves as net-minders Alisha Latyn and Kara Mark truly held their teams in the game.  Special congratulations to both girls for their determination and focus throughout the entire tournament.

Over the weekend Leah Wagler was a force to be reckoned with as she scored 6 goals and crashed the nets hard; she was instrumental in the tournament.  The Wolverine team had to be quick and chip away at the danglers in front of the net, which is exactly what Brianna Arends, Stainer-Mace, and Wagler did.  Arends always creates offensive play with her fast skating and endless energy, and Wagler was in the right place many times.  Great digging in the corners by Lindsay Slessor, Sierra Egli and Tia DeRuiter who gave it their all.  Egli and Slessor were terrific back-checking as well.  The Wolverines adjusted their game plans with a player absent, dropping Carson Weiler and Abby Daer back to defense which was extremely effective.  With strong defensive player Avery Vance back in the line up, she, Kate Baumgart and Julia James did a great job clearing the puck from their end.  James was solid at the blue line and kept firing the puck back in.  Overall, a great effort by the defensive team who should be commended for their consistent, steady play.

The Wolverines thank their sponsors The Optimist Club of New Hamburg, their dedicated coaching staff, and proud, supportive fans for a great season.  Best of luck to all Wilmot teams heading to Ottawa for Provincials!  GO WOLVERINES!
