Wilmot Atom B Skate Hard to a Silver Medal
The B-W Feed & Seed/Stitch Graphix Atom B Wolverines travelled to Clarington over the weekend of October 12th-14th eager to compete in their first tournament of the season.  They demonstrated true grit as they put forth a solid effort to earn the silver medal at the 2012 Clarington Applefest Tournament.

The Wolverines opened their round robin play on Friday morning facing the North Simcoe Capitals. Wilmot dominated the play thorough out the game, keeping the puck deep in the Capitals end. With Wilmot effectively moving the puck and passing, all lines made strong contributions to the scoring, while Paige Carter led with two points. The strong defensive lineup of Kayla Schenk, Madison Oliver, Kara Cook, Marley O’Connell, and Madison McCormick helped Gillian Knarr claim her first shut out of the tournament, and the Wolverines walked away with the victory with a final score of 5-0.

In their second game of the tournament, the girls would face the North York Storm. Continuing to be a dominate force; the Wolverines were disciplined in their play. The Storm’s coaching staff would comment after the game on how well the Wolverines played a system, causing frustration for the Storm players. The offensive lineup of Jenna Kumpf, Julia Kehl, and Lauren Bast helped lead the team to a 7-2 victory.

Closing out their round robin play, the Wolverines took on the North Durham Blades. While the Wolverines played a strong game and kept the puck out of their end, the game was scoreless until the final seconds of the second period, when Hailey Scott took the pass from Taryn McIntrye and buried it deep in the Blades net. The Wolverines would go on to score two more goals in the third period, with Emily Hussey joining Scott and McIntyre as an unstoppable force earning points in the victory. Knarr remained focused throughout the game, coming up with some key saves when the Blades were able to penetrate into Wilmot’s end.

Moving onto the quarter finals the undefeated Wolverines faced the hometown favourites, the Clarington Flames. The Wolverine spirit overwhelmed the building with a sea of blue and yellow jerseys in the stands as the Peewee and Bantam teams joined in to cheer on their Wolverine sisters to a 2-0 victory. The Atom girls kept the packed stands on the edge of their seats with a scoreless first two periods of play. In the end it was the fast skating and sharp shooting of Meghan Young that led the team to a 2-0 victory.

In an early morning semi-final game, the Wolverines would face the Kingston Ice Wolves. Once again, the Wolverines demonstrated a solid focus on their positional play, but they could not get the puck past Kingston’s netminder. Finally breaking through in the second, the Wolverines were able to score twice to advance to the finals.

In the championship game, Wilmot would face the only other undefeated team in their division, the Belleville Bearcats. As expected, Wilmot had to come out hard to keep the Bearcats off the scoreboard. After successfully doing so for almost the first 20 minutes of the game, the Bearcats scored with just seconds left in the second period. Coming out as determined as ever, Wilmot battled in the third period in an attempt to even up the score. They eventually pulled their goalie in the final minutes of play, but just couldn’t pull it off, and Belleville was able to add a couple more. With coaches and parents proud of the outstanding effort put forth in their first tournament of the season, Wilmot took home the silver medal.
